Myofascial Bodywork in San Francisco

Brian Esty, CMT

Myofascial Bodywork is rooted in the idea of re-aligning our center of gravity so that we use our energetic resouces efficiently, subject ourselves to the least amount of wear and tear and experience the greatest possible freedom of movement. It is a form of deep tissue bodywork where the focus is on reorganization rather than merely release, thereby creating long lasting change. Often this work is done with a planned series of sessions which touch all of the primary musculoskeletal components.

Oprah has Dr. Oz on getting Rolfed

In our first years of life, when we were learning how to  stand and walk what we were working out was how to oppose a constant, unforgiving force that literally laid us flat on our backs. Using trial and error, we established a set of routines that afforded us some freedom of movement in this force, perhaps the first profound victory of our lives.  The tool we had to work with. our structural body, is exquisitely refined to potentially use the least amount of energy for the purpose of moving around in the field of gravity. Our ancestors were able to to move continually while they were growing and as a result were able to easily hone in on the optimal relationships between their bones and soft tissue. With our sedentary lifestyles this is rarely the case and what is common are sub optimal postures that deplete energy in a continual fight with gravity. Structural Integration Bodywork is a method for thoroughly investigating and "rubbing out" these imbalances, and the result is a feeling of mastery and ease. One also feels and looks younger and the rebalancing process may continue to unfold on its own for perhaps a year after the series.

How it works: Sheets of fascia which look like "Saran Wrap" around all muscles and muscle groups. Slowly applied pressure melts adhesions between these sheets, recreating the ability for them to slide over each other. By working towards the centerline of each body segment the muscle groups can reorganize and set to a more efficient pattern. By always considering what is going on locally in the context of the whole, the body can be nudged torwards greater efficiency, which is experienced as fluidity and freedom of movement.
